Yesterday was amphibian day :-)
Rob had a bit of a sniffle yesterday, largely, we think, because of a rather noxious bonfire that was spewing horrid smoke all day on Saturday, such that we had to keep all the windows shut despite how muggy it was.

So after lunch I suggested we toddle up to Foremark Reservoir and go for one of the signed walks, even though it was raining a bit. It was quite a pleasant walk, although it could have been signed rather better - there was a sign missing at one point and we ended up going back by a rather different route than we'd been supposed to.

Just before we got back to the car park though, we found two tiny little frogs hopping through the grass. I took a couple of pictures. What with the rain and the hopping, they aren't that great, but here's one anyway :-

Then yesterday evening, I was out with my trowel, hunting down the wretched slugs who've been munching on my winter pansies, and I found, to my great joy that I had a mollusc-hunting colleague in the form of a small toad. I love toads, and I really don't understand why people seem to think they're ugly. Hopefully this one will have a big appetite and with any luck he'll bring his extended family round for dinner...

...we found two tiny little frogs hopping through the grass.

Our garden is a favourite for the local frogs and toads; we see them regularly. There are several gardens with ponds in our road so they're spoilt for choice of places to live.

A few days ago, as I moved a heavy length of pre-loved air-compressor hose, pulling it out of the grass to put its end into one of the house rain barrels to transfer some water from the top-of-garden barrels, a huge frog, light green with brownish-black spots, leapt out of the high grass that had grown up over the hose, and boinged off across the grass. By the time I'd gone inside and got the camera, though, it was nowhere to be seen.

Yep; frogged off smartish. Our garden is the prowling territory of several of our feline neighbours, so I hope he/she hid away carefully.

It does that sometimes. Dead annoying, I find it.

We get absolutely tiny frogs in our garden, often sniffed out by our cat, who likes to pat frogs but doesn't do them any harm.

I had a cat once who used to bring me frogs in the middle of the night. They were unharmed too, and released again in the morning no worse for wear.

Your cat sounds like a friendly sort of feline :-)

All our cats have been friendly sorts - apart when dealing with intruders in the garden!

I was worried all the way back to the cafe that I was going to accidentally step on one of his brethren - I'd have been horrified if I'd done that!

No kidding; that would have been horrible and gross to go along with it.

I was reading Wikipedia as I was not at all sure that I would be able to tell the difference between a frog and a toad, and apparently there isn't a lot of difference, outwardly, between frogs and toads except for bumps behind the eyes on toads. How do YOU tell the difference? Maybe you know more than Wikipedia; they didn't sound so sure of themselves!

How do YOU tell the difference?

I was always taught that toads are bumpy while frogs are smooth. Also, frogs spend much more time immersed than toads do, so if you see one in the water, it's more likely to be a frog.

Movement wise, frogs tend to jump more, whereas toads will generally amble along unless startled.

According to this page, toads are technically frogs in any case ;- http://allaboutfrogs.org/weird/general/frogtoad.html
