Unsatisfying villain deaths... Dear Kouta Hirano
( Hellsing ending rant )
Granted, these are only a fraction of the problems I had with the manga (mostly from chapter 67 onward), but it's by far the biggest headdesk moment for me, even moreso than Alucard's "death" and subsequent "ressurection."

bookchallenge, round 2 If I'd remembered to keep track, I probably would have reached the goal number the last time around. Oh well. Time for a restart. :)
Let's see now. New time period: from the last week of December 2009 to the last week of December 2010, since I'm including books read in the last month. Goal: 50 books. Children's books will count as 1/2 a book, rereads as a full book unless I change my mind.
1. Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie: These are stories about love, loss, sacrifice, and what shapes us, whether it's basketball, the love for the written word, or infidelity. Mostly happening in and around Seattle, the main characters are Indian, primarily from the Spokane tribe - which makes sense, since Alexie himself is Spokane. I really enjoyed this short story collection; the characters are varied and thoroughly fleshed-out. 5 out of 5.
2. The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin: First in a fantasy trilogy called Chronicles of the Necromancer, the story introduces a nicely built fantasy world of magic, goddesses, and ghosts. While 'a prince on the run and a ragtag group he finds along the way must stop an evil power from taking over their world' is not anything new, the characters are interesting, gender-varied and believable, and I like the system of magic and politics between the various countries. 4 and 1/2 out of 5.
3. The Blood King by Gail Z. Martin: Second in the trilogy. The drama and anticipation built up nicely, but I thought the conclusion itself was kind of abrupt. We'll see if the third book picks up speed or meanders... Even with the pacing, I enjoyed the story and new plot entanglements. 4 out of 5.
4. Witch & Wizard by James Patterson (and in small print Gabrielle Charbonnet): This was a christmas gift from a friend, sweet but misguided. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone else. It seems to be trying to appeal to YA and fantasy readers, but the language and style isn't really coherent. There are randomly invented slang words, abrupt violence mixed with childish language, and no real depth to the story or characters. It feels deliberately dumbed down to create a (false) sense of mystery: if I had to describe it with one phrase, I'd say it was ham-handed. Honestly, there's a distinct difference between a story for young adults and a story that hasn't been written well. 2 out of 5.

Here are today’s stats on my second urban fantasy adventure — this time with my sexy undead thief, her shady agent, a cigar box full of magical penis bones, a mentally ill former NASA engineer-turned-sorceress, and the continued fabulosity of a Cuban drag queen:
Project: Hellbent
Deadline: August 9, 2010
New Words Written: 845
Present Total Word Count: 6266

Things Accomplished in Fiction: More lower-bodily fixated humor which is not terribly mature; the gig is presented and Raylene waffles over taking it; it looks too easy, and she isn’t stupid.
Things Accomplished in Real Life: Started new day-job project; had lunch at Mexican place with the husband (who hung around the house doing his own freelance stuff today for awhile); worked on my FORT FREAK segments until my eyes bled; chatted extensively with Justine, who is awesome.
Other: No, it isn’t very many words. I’m not shooting for volume; I’m just trying to keep my toes dangling in the creative writing pond while I’m up to my ass in editorial on these other projects. And the fact is, I wrote another three thousand words on my FORT FREAK segments, putting me well over the line for what I’m allowed — and I’m only halfway through, but oh well. I can fix it later.
Total Official Word Count of 2010: 6266 words

Mars needs Benadryl! O hai, smut writers. I have a bone to pick a point of contention with some of you. Here is an example fanfic quote:
Eventually, the need for oxygen drove him to surface, gasping for air.
Is this quote (from a favorite fic, I might add) referring to undersea diving? No! It is referring to smooching! This is only one of many similar sentences which I have encountered. What is with all the characters who gotta stop smoochin' on account of being out of breath? This is not difficult, like walking and chewing gum; no, breathing through one's nose is an elementary life skill for most individuals, and personal experience demonstrates that it is usually possible to employ that skill during smooching.
Writers who use this "can't breath while kissing" trope--do your characters have chronic sinus congestion? Are they snogging giant tentacle monsters, whose suckers were haphazardly and inconveniently placed over all the smoochee's available breathing orifices? Are they noseless creatures from beyond the Moon? Rat would like to know this.
Thank you for your time.

Books 42 - 44...so close, but yet so far. I'm officially concluding my first attempt at 50 books in a year...not a solid win, but certainly I read a lot more than I did last year, and isn't that the point? These are the last two entries before I start over again. I'll give it my all this year and see what transpires...
Title: Green Angel Author: Alice Hoffman Themes/Topics: Nature, Triumph over Tragedy
This is a little outside of my realm as it is young adult literature, but as it is Hoffman I enjoyed it. She has the ability to paint such a clear portrait of the main character and her transformation from youth through tragedy and loss to an awareness of self. I would define this as a coming-of-age story about the ability of the human spirit to recover from great loss.
Title: The Girl Who Kicked the Hornest Nest Author: Stieg Larsson Themes/Topics: Mystery, Conspiracy, Violence, Infringement of Rights
I don't want to say much to fans that have read the first two of this trilogy but this just as imaginative and addictive as the rest. It took me a little longer to get hooked into this book but it was very compelling and a satisfying read. My only disappointment is that Larsson died in 2004 and will not be able to share any more of his creativity and talent with the world.
Title: The Well of Eternity (WarCraft: War of the Ancients Trilogy, Book 1) Author: Richard Knaak Themes/Topics: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, War, Evil
As a person who has never played WarCraft, it was interesting for me to read this book. My boyfriend plays and I read it to learn a little more about this game that I find so pecular. It was tough for me to get into this at first, probably because I'm not really into sci-fi. Once I got the hang of the jargon, I found it to be an interesting story and I wanted to see how it would end, which is the most I can ask from any book. I'm sure I'll continue with the Trilogy, but I still am adamant that I will not play the game, just not my style.

Last Morning The Last Place on Earth, by Mike "Nick" Nichols An incredibly stunning collection of photographs of wild places in Africa, published in a very large format (about 16" X 11.5") and with graceful framing text by the likes of David Quammen (who told me to seek out megatransect stuff in the first place) and Mike Fay (the originator of the Megatransect - the guy who Nichols and Quammen were following through the bush - more about him later because I'll be reading excerpts from his journals shortly). Amaaaaaaaaaazing. If you can ogle this you should. As an aside, I do not know what it says about me that I generally find myself most moved by photos of reptiles and amphibians... but this book has some keen shots of those, in addition to the equally gorgeous pictures of chimps, gorillas, leopards, bongos, elephants (LOTS of elephants), etc. (7/200)
First Darling of the Morning, by Thrity Umrigar Short, easy-to-read-but-literary memoir (a series of short essays, really) about growing up in Bombay. Powerful and endearing. Recommended but with the caveat that none of the stuff on the cover of this book led me to believe that some of the family stuff (only a few essays, but) would be as dark as it was. May be triggery for those who had a physically or emotionally abusive parent. (I don't usually bring this stuff up, but like I said - there was NO warning of this in what I'd read about the book or saw on the cover before reading it - kind of a shock to read such things when you are expecting more or less "light and happy" and sitting in a public place.... most of the book is quite delicate & cheerful in tone, and it's not that the sad parts don't fit, they totally do, I just wasn't mentally prepared for them. The Booklist review on the amazon page I linked to *does* give a good idea of this content so you may want to read it if you are concerned.) (8/200)

New Year's Eve 2005. Title: New Year's Eve, 2005. Characters: Rose/Ten Rating: G, kinda fluffy (which is ironic, given the episode) Spoilers: End of Time special Summary: I'm sure someone has done something to this effect, but I felt as if this scene should have a Rose POV. a girl on a generation ship EDIT- Ok, found it! Thanks guys. I guess I did not look hard enough, it is in fact called The Green Book
Hello! I'm looking for a book that I read when I was around 12 years old, around 2000.
It's a story about kids living on a space ship traveling for many many years to some habitable planet. It focuses on one young girl, and I believe her sister or something? The main girl has brought with her a green book, which turns out to be a diary later on, and I think the book is presented as the contents of the diary. They arrive at the planet, and there are strange creatures and unbreakable trees, and the people have trouble growing food and stuff. I think it was short; under 200 pages.
The green book thing seems like it was very significant. I thought the title might have something to do with it but I can't find anything.
Thanks!

It concerned a John Lennon quote, pretty much along the lines of "Smart women didn't exist till Yoko came along", which seemed kinda mean towards every other female ever in his life! The original poster had seen it at some art galery/exhibition.
Its not important to find the actual post, all I really want is the exact quote from Lennon -any ideas?

90's Kids News Show Ok, I was watching the Simpsons episode where Lisa and Bart are on a Kids News show and it got me to remembering an actual kids news show from my childhood.
It's very possible that this show was a pacific northwest or washington local show. I remember that the intro showed kids doing all the production work on the news show and a vaguely remember there being an animated creature (blue perhaps?) that was around from time to time. I'm not sure if they ever actually did any news reporting but that was the general concept.
Anyone know?
(also, it's not Nick News but while googling I discovered that Nick News is still on and was astonished)

#2: The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart This first book of Stewart's acclaimed Arthurian Saga examines the childhood and maturation of Merlin. From his birth, Myriddin Emrys is set apart from other children, and not merely because he was born a bastard to a Welsh princess. He is strange and precocious, using his intellect even when his burgeoning magical powers didn't serve him. After his grandfather the king is killed, Merlin flees from the household. God leads him on a strange path northward into foreign lands, but Merlin doesn't fear. He has seen his own death, and he knows that in the intervening years Britain will change and he will be an instrument of many kings.
Honestly, I avoided reading this book for years because I think King Arthur has been done to death. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book since I wasn't familiar with Merlin's mythology and thought the plot came together beautifully. However, as Uther became a central figure, I liked the story less. This is completely my own bias. Mary Stewart is an excellent writer, and it's easy to see why this series has remained a consistent seller for decades. However, I won't be continuing with the next volume.

Movie Years ago I saw this movie about robots (possibly late 80's through 90's). The main character goes to this location/resort where robots cater to people's [sexual] desires. "Clients" are dying within the [resort] and thus our main character steps in to investigate. In the end the main character fights a man that escaped from [prison?]. The [villain] is trying to download other [prison mates] into the bodies of blank robots. Main character saves the day and ends up getting the chick (from what I can remember he looks Jean-Claude Van Damme-esq or could possibly be him). I could possibly be wrong about the plot of the movie since it was long ago but I do know it is not: -Westworld -Logan's Run -Blade Runner -Futureworld -Screamers
I tried googling all robot/cyborg-themed movies along with asking ask_me_anything . I've been through all the different movie trailers possible but yet none look like the one I'm searching for. Help me remember?

![[User Picture]](http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/76427177/14968622) [Link] | Oh, FFS. No, I have never wondered why the Doctor wears long-sleeved tops all the time. It's his outfit. I assume this was Ten (I didn't really read past "have you ever wondered..."), and therefore the outfit in question would be a suit and trainers. Regardless of which Doctor it is, he doesn't really deviate from the outfit, and most men's fashions involve long sleeves. It's not remotely surprising.
Sure, everyone has the right to their own interpretation, DL;DR, etc, etc, but mine is this: cutting is a way of releasing emotional stress, and the Doctor seems pretty determined to keep his angst. I won't argue against his self-destructive tendancies, but I really think that he shows it in other ways: running around getting into trouble, pushing away everyone who loves him, that time he tried to kill himself by standing there dramatically while the ship fell apart around him, to name a few from canon. Dramatic stuff which he can kind of deny if he tries hard enough, and which *adds* to his angst-level rather than detracting from it.
To be fair, though, I didn't think I could believe Rodney with an ED either, yet somebody made it work. I don't think this author is the one, but it's theoretically possible.

They have magic, for Merlin's sake In HP, there are things that would pose a major hassle for a Muggle but be a relatively minor inconvenience to an adult wizard. For example, if Harry is caught in a major storm, he can either Apparate to safety or conjure up shelter and send a Patronus for help. He isn't going to have to re-enact the Hatchet with his girlfriend in tow. Also, if you think a character is OOC, why are you posting. It's already been two and a half months since you posted the first chapter. Your readers will wait for you to do another draft.
Off topic, but my flist is so small that I can't get a representative sample. How much cultural literacy do you expect your readers to have? I write in HP fandom and I had one character retell the story of Scheherazade from 1001 Nights and several readers wrote in to ask if it was a real story. Since the premise of the fic is that character serving as a kind of Scheherazade for another character, I was a bit concerned. I thought it was one of those stories Americans and Brits at least learned by cultural osmosis. Any advice on how to handle this sort of thing better in the future so I don't get ranted about for making obscure references?

Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom
Book# 2 of 50; 616 of 15,000 Pgs by December 2010; 2nd Read Title: Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom Author: Julie Kenner Genre: SciFi / Fantasy Add'l Info: Paperback; 307 pages; Kate Connor, Demon Hunter Series (1 of 5 (so far)). Synopsis:( From The Book )
My Thoughts: Rating: 8 out of 10 Since I now own two more books in the series, I've decided to read the first 3 again. This is my second time reading this book, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. Kate's sarcastic wit, love of family, and (rusty) butt kicking abilities, are an odd but fun mix! Admittedly, some of the plot points are predictable, and I found the final scene in the book a bit lacking, but over all, Carpe Demon is a great introduction to Kate and the cast of characters that make up her life in San Diablo, California.
In Depth: I'm actually not going to do this part this time, as I don't think I can do so without possibly spoiling book 2 in the process. That's the drawback with knowing some of what's ahead.

A song/Artist? My friend, who adores Dubstep, had a song on while I was at his house the other day that I can't get out of my head! The problem is I only (think) I know one line, which starts off very "retro" sounding and the line is:
"Je ne t'aime plus, mon amour" Any help?

Unless you're a contortionist... ... or *seriously* hung...
I'm pretty sure you didn't mean to say your characters are having penetrative sex 'back to back'.
In fact, after reading the rest of the paragraph, I'm sure you meant, 'back to front', as in both parties facing the same wall. That will work well a few different ways. But seriously, I stopped reading for a full two minutes trying to figure out how they were going to get it on 'back to back'.

Mrs. Lovett =/= Quailman
Dear Sweeney Todd authors,
Unless you're writing a modern day AU, Mrs. Lovett (or any other woman) should not be wearing her corset over her dress. No, seriously, she shouldn't, because she'd look like a damned lunatic. In the Victorian period, "corset" referred exclusively to an undergarment. It'd be like me wearing my bra over my shirt, but with added moral outrage from the neighbors. Cut it out.
Love, Me
P.S. I have some issues with corset-style tops being called corsets, too, but that's not important right now.

Book about giant roaches? They were taking over the (island?) in the book they came to the conclusion the roaches were possibly communicating by telepathy or something similar comparing them to the way ants comunicate. Oh yeah, I am pretty sure the roaches could fly and were eating people.
Read it back in middle school 26 years ago or so. Purchased it at the SuperX drug store.
Yeah, a LONG shot, I know.
Thanks in advance!

body in swimming pool Setting: Phoenix, Arizona circa mid-September 1984
Premise: Character A (late twenties, average height and build) is killed, and her body is left in a swimming pool in an outdoor courtyard.
Search Terms: I'll be honest -- I was kind of scared to Google anything about dead bodies because there would be some nightmare-inducing Image Search results. I did read up on buoyancy of the human body and several of the Wikipedia articles ending in "mortis," so I have some basic knowledge of the science involved. I also read the previous posts to this community regarding decomp.
Behind the cut, questions about how corpses behave in water. ( Cut for squick. )
Thank you in advance for your help.

Wales, unstable person with a gun Where: Cardiff, Wales When: 2040ish Fandom: Torchwood
A woman is transported by the rift (a tear in time in the Cardiff area) to approximately the year 2040. There, they are rapidly discovered by the local as someone who is:
1) Behaving oddly, disoriented and confused, possibly lost, possibly under the influence or mentally unstable, but not trying to hurt anyone; 2) Not Linked (connected to the future internet/cellphone 24/7 via wireless broadband), which is usually either a punishment for certain crimes or a choice by religious fanatics - and she doesn't look like some sort of fundamentalist; 3) Armed with a handgun, with a concealed holster; 4) Not identifiable in any local (UK or EU) databases - no government record of her at all; no passport, drivers license, etc. anywhere they have immediate access to. They don't have her name yet, but assume very sophisticated computerized visual matching capacity, so there is no photo that matches her anywhere within hundreds of miles.
Granted that this is several decades in the future, I have to start somewhere - what would the Welsh police do NOW if they showed up in a similar situation? Would she be arrested, and for what? How big a problem would the gun (and lack of permit, if they are required) be for her?

Fantasy kids book about a logging or mining dispute?
Hi everyone. A patron at the public library where I work has requested help finding a chapter book she read sometime in the 90s, although she believes it is an older book than that. She gave the following clues: - The main character is a girl, who at the beginning of the story moves in with her grandmother or great-aunt or other older relative
- The plot involves a mining or logging rights dispute regarding a nearby mountain.
- A tree (presumably the one on the cover and probably one on the mountain) might host some sort of fantasy-other world inside it.
- Speaking of the cover, it has a big gnarled tree and a girl.
I know it's not much to go on, but any help would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance.

This is serious business, y'know Okay, I know that fan fiction shouldn't be srz bzns or whatever, but can we please have a pairing fic for my current fandom that doesn't have the characters spending paragraphs upon paragraphs going "woe is me!" Because I don't find it dramatic, i just want to yell at the author that she needs to have these characters freakin' communicate to get there problems sorted out. And I don't want to yell at the author because normally her exuberance about everything makes me feel so much happier at the end of the day. But when a character starts cutting themselves* I click the back-button like mad on something I had started to like.
Bonus rant: Fan fiction sections on forums are not a place to have a topic to say "There will be fics here eventually!" Forums don't operate the same as archives, so I try to be accepting, but if you don't even have a basic plot to entice us with, this just seems like spam to me.
*in my current fandom, how the heck is this even possible?!

The Doctor is not stupid. Okay, standard fanfic trope: Rose gets kidnapped by aliens and traumatized. You, author, decide to dial it up to 11 with sexual assault (of course) and torture. The Doctor rescues her (of course). Then he goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, grabs a gun (!) and goes charging into the alien stronghold without a plan (?) intent on killing every last mother's son of them (?!). And gets himself captured by the alien sadists (of course) and despairs that there's no way out (??). Then Rose, proving that she's not too bright herself in this fic, goes wandering, still not recovered, away from the TARDIS just so the aliens can pick her up again (of course) and shove her and the Doctor together for a shag-or-die scenario(!?!). Whereupon I stopped reading, because even I am not that big of a masochist. :-P
No. First of all, the Doctor doesn't generally burn hot, not unless his anger comes from fear. He burns cold. If something like that happened to Rose--really, to any of his companions while they were under his protection--he would absolutely make the perps pay. He would not, however, go charging in WITH A GUN (especially not as this is Ten, who hates guns) in order to massacre the lot of them. That's just stupid, and the Doctor, thick as he can be sometimes, is not stupid. If he were intent on killing them all, he's got way more resources at his disposal than mere projectile weapons. And though he often does go in seemingly without a plan, his brain is always two steps ahead, and if he gets captured, it's usually part of his Xanatos Gambit. Furthermore, when the Doctor is angry, truly angry, he's at his most dangerous, and his most dangerous rarely involves something as simple as shooting a bitch.
TL;DR--The author sets up a shag-or-die scenario in just about the worst way possible, requiring that the Doctor sacrifice most of his prodigious IQ and his basic personality in order to make it work.
